Maria Sibylla Merian has been fascinated by the world of insects since she was a child, her passion leads her to continue studying, research and observation even as an adult.
The place where he works is a real laboratory in which he observes the eggs from which the caterpillars were born, and the consequent transformation from caterpillar to butterfly through the metamorphosis of the cocoon.
She made the first drawings and engravings in which insects, plants and flowers are represented in their various transformations, which were then useful for his publications and in 1675 his first work "Neues Blumenbuch" (new book of flowers) was printed and in 1679 he publishes a second great book “Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung und Sonderbare Blumennahrung” The marvelous metamorphosis of caterpillars and their singular feeding on flowers.

A courageous woman, she challenged popular beliefs, according to some studies undertaken by Aristotle, that insects were the result of a spontaneous generation that occurred from the putrefaction of mud and were consequently considered "diabolical beasts".
She took a great risk in an era when women who were interested in science, biology and the subsequent study of insects, could easily be accused and tried for witchcraft.
